The premise

In a small island off the American coast, the Whateleys live in an old mill where a mysterious bloody being creates an atmosphere of horror. After her parents get killed by lightning, young Susannah is sent to New York by her aunt Agatha, who wants her to avoid the family curse. Years later Susannah, now married, persuades her husband to spend a holiday in the abandoned mill. Once on the island, Susannah and Mike soon find themselves exposed to the hostility of a gang of thugs led by Ethan, Susannah's brutal cousin.

When Susannah returns as an adult to the remote New England island mill she was spirited away from as a child, she and her husband quickly discover that the locals — including her own kin — have very strong reasons for wanting them gone. Something lurks behind a locked room in the crumbling mill, and the curse that shadowed her family since birth may not be finished with her yet. Drawing on Lovecraftian source material, the film wraps its supernatural dread in the sun-bleached menace of a hostile island community. Moody British cinematography and a standout early Oliver Reed performance give this late-sixties oddity a distinctly unsettling atmosphere.
