The premise

The San Francisco area is beset by a series of seemingly random murders without motive or pattern. The police are taunted by phone calls and letters. Could the maniac be the violent truck driver, or the seemingly mild-mannered mailman, or even a cop?

Horror Vault's take

Ripped from real headlines that were still fresh when cameras rolled, this low-budget 1971 chiller plunges viewers into the fog-shrouded Bay Area as a faceless killer terrorizes the community and mocks the detectives hunting him. Suspicion falls on several very different men — a volatile truck driver, a quiet postal worker, even a lawman — and the film leans hard into the unnerving possibility that evil can wear any face. The procedural tension is amplified by the killer's taunting correspondence with police, mirroring the actual Zodiac case that remained unsolved at the time of production. It's a rough-edged, exploitation-tinged portrait of civic dread that trades polished scares for a persistent, crawling unease.
