The premise
Thanks to a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed overnight from legendary monsters to fellow citizens. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many remain apprehensive about these creatures "coming out of the coffin." Religious leaders, government officials, and vampire fundamentalists around the world have chosen their sides. But in the small Louisiana town of Bon Temps, the jury is still out.
Horror Vault's take
In the sun-drenched bayous of rural Louisiana, the world has been turned upside down: vampires are out of the coffin and demanding equal rights, thanks to a synthetic blood substitute that makes humans theoretically safe. Bon Temps waitress Sookie Stackhouse finds herself pulled into this charged new reality when a vampire walks into her life and her small community is forced to choose sides. True Blood layers Southern Gothic atmosphere over sharp social commentary, wrapping it all in steamy romance and darkly comic drama. With a sprawling cast of humans, vampires, and things stranger still, the series goes far beyond a simple love story.
