In a candlelit 19th-century German manor, a mysterious shadow-player arrives at a baron's dinner party and weaves an uncanny vision for the assembled guests — one that forces each of them to confront the darkest possible consequences of jealousy and desire. A landmark of German Expressionist silent cinema, the film uses shadow-play and distorted imagery as its primary language, blurring the line between waking life and nightmare.
