The premise
In 1989, an ambitious young woman gets a weave in order to succeed in the image-obsessed world of music television. However, her flourishing career may come at a great cost when she realizes that her new hair may have a mind of its own.

Set against the glittering, cutthroat world of late-1980s music television, Bad Hair follows a young Black woman whose desperate bid for career success leads her to a transformative new hairstyle — one that proves to have sinister appetites of its own. Writer-director Justin Simien wraps sharp social commentary in a gleefully unnerving horror package, using the weave as a visceral metaphor for the pressures Black women face to conform. The film balances genuine scares with biting wit, anchored by a standout lead performance from Elle Lorraine. Fans of socially conscious horror with a retro aesthetic will find plenty to sink their teeth into.
