The premise
A young man, Peter, returns to Austria in search of his heritage. There he visits the castle of an ancestor, a sadistic Baron who was cursed to a violent death by a witch whom the Baron had burned at the stake. Peter reads aloud the incantation that causes Baron Blood to return and continue his murderous tortures.

When a young American travels to Austria to explore his family's dark past, he discovers that some ancestors are better left undisturbed. An ancient curse tied to a bloodthirsty baron and the witch he wronged proves terrifyingly easy to trigger — and far harder to contain. Mario Bava brings his signature brooding visual style to this fog-drenched castle chiller, blending Gothic atmosphere with bursts of visceral violence. The sins of the past have a way of walking the present corridors in the most literal sense.
