The premise

Count Dracula, a 15th-century prince, is condemned to live off the blood of the living for eternity. Young lawyer Jonathan Harker is sent to Dracula's castle to finalise a land deal, but when the Count sees a photo of Harker's fiancée, Mina, the spitting image of his dead wife, he imprisons him and sets off for London to track her down.

Horror Vault's take

Francis Ford Coppola's lavish adaptation brings Bram Stoker's iconic vampire tale to vivid, operatic life, following the ancient and terrifying Count Dracula as he abandons his Transylvanian fortress and descends upon Victorian London in pursuit of a woman he believes is his reincarnated love. Gary Oldman delivers a mesmerising, shape-shifting performance as the Count, while Anthony Hopkins anchors the resistance as the indomitable vampire hunter Van Helsing. Steeped in sumptuous Gothic imagery and practical in-camera effects, the film blurs the line between monster and tragic romantic hero. It is one of the most visually extravagant horror films of its era, as much a dark love story as a tale of blood and terror.
