The premise
When New York is caught in the grip of a sadistic serial killer who preys on patrons of the city's underground bars, rookie cop Steve Burns infiltrates the S&M subculture to try and lure him out of the shadows.
Horror Vault's take
In early-1980s New York City, a young NYPD officer is sent deep undercover into the city's clandestine leather-and-S&M bar scene to catch a serial killer targeting its patrons. The deeper Steve Burns descends into this shadowy world, the more the line between performance and self blurs in deeply disquieting ways. Director William Friedkin crafts a film less concerned with clean answers than with the psychological toll of living a double life. It remains one of the most provocative and debated thrillers of its era.
