Horror Vault's take

A scrappy film crew grinding through the production of a cheap zombie flick gets far more authenticity than they bargained for when the undead show up for real. French director Michel Hazanavicius puts a meta-comic spin on the zombie genre, weaving together the madness of low-budget filmmaking with gloriously gory mayhem. The film plays with structure and form in ways that reward patient viewers, building to a wildly entertaining payoff. Equal parts love letter to cinema and outrageous horror-comedy, it's a fresh take on well-trodden undead territory.
