“What terrifying craving made her kill... and kill... and kill...”
Directed by Pete Walker
The premise
In 1957, Dorothy and Edmund Yates were committed to an institution for the criminally insane, she for acts of murder and cannibalism and he for covering up her crimes. Fifteen years later, they are pronounced fit for society and released. However, in Dorothy's case the doctors may have jumped the gun a bit. Edmund and eldest daughter, Jackie, try to discover just how far Mother's bloodlust has taken her. Meanwhile, youngest daughter Debbie begins to explore the crazy roots of her family tree as fully as possible.
Horror Vault's take
A couple with a history of shocking violent crimes are released from a psychiatric institution after fifteen years, and almost immediately the quiet English countryside becomes a hunting ground for dark impulses that were never truly extinguished. As one family member works desperately to contain the damage, another seems drawn toward the darkness rather than away from it. Director Pete Walker delivers a grimly effective British horror steeped in domestic dread and transgressive violence. This 1974 shocker sits at the sinister intersection of family horror and proto-slasher, unsettling in ways that linger long after the credits roll.
