Horror Vault's take
Set against a brooding Victorian backdrop, this Masters of Horror entry follows Ernst Haeckel, a young man consumed by his quest to conquer death through the dark art of reanimation. When a grieving widower seeks out a necromancer for help, he is warned through Haeckel's cautionary story of what happens when science and obsession push beyond the natural order. Adapted from a Clive Barker tale, the film revels in Gothic atmosphere and Grand Guignol excess, delivering a morality fable steeped in dread and visceral unease.
