The premise

David Callaway tries to piece together his life in the wake of his wife's suicide and has been left to raise his nine-year-old daughter, Emily on his own. David is at first amused to discover that Emily has created an imaginary friend named 'Charlie', but it isn't long before 'Charlie' develops a sinister and violent side, and as David struggles with his daughter's growing emotional problems, he comes to the frightening realisation that 'Charlie' isn't just a figment of Emily's imagination.

Horror Vault's take

After a devastating family tragedy, a widowed psychiatrist relocates with his young daughter to a remote upstate New York home, hoping a fresh start will help them both heal. The girl soon conjures what appears to be an imaginary playmate named Charlie — but as Charlie's influence grows darker and dangerous incidents begin to mount, her father can no longer dismiss the friendship as harmless child's play. Equal parts psychological slow-burn and supernatural unease, the film keeps you guessing about what is real and what lurks in the shadows of a grieving mind. De Niro and a chilling Dakota Fanning anchor a mystery that tightens its grip with every uneasy scene.
