The premise
As a deadly virus ravages the world, Dr. Martin Lowery embarks on a mission to reach test site ATU327A, a research hub deep in the Arboreal Forest. The arduous journey, guided by park scout Alma, is set back by a nighttime attack that leaves the two bruised and shoeless. When they run into Zach, a man living off the grid, they gratefully accept his help. Zach’s intentions aren’t exactly what they seem, however, and a path out of the forest and into safety quickly fades as the line between myth and science blurs.

Set against the backdrop of a world ravaged by pandemic, a researcher and his forest scout venture deep into ancient woodland to reach a remote scientific outpost — only for a violent encounter to leave them dangerously vulnerable. Rescue arrives in the form of a solitary man living off the grid, but his motives and beliefs open a rift between rational science and something far older and stranger. Ben Wheatley's fever-dream wilderness horror blurs the boundary between empirical research and dark folklore until neither the characters nor the viewer can be sure which rules apply. Disorienting light and sound design amplify the sense that the forest itself may be an active, malevolent presence.
