Set against the hazy elegance of 1920s Taisho-era Japan, Kagero-za follows a playwright drawn into a consuming fascination with a mysterious woman whose very existence seems to blur the line between the living and the dead. Director Seijun Suzuki crafts a languid, hypnotic atmosphere where reality dissolves into fever-dream imagery and romantic obsession courts the supernatural. The film moves less like a conventional ghost story and more like a waking hallucination — lush, unsettling, and deeply strange.
