The premise
A disease carried by common cockroaches is killing Manhattan children. In an effort to stop the epidemic an entomologist, Susan Tyler, creates a mutant breed of insect that secretes a fluid to kill the roaches. This mutant breed was engineered to die after one generation, but three years later Susan finds out that the species has survived and evolved into a large, gruesome monster that can mimic human form.

When a deadly cockroach-borne epidemic threatens Manhattan's children, entomologist Susan Tyler engineers a genetically modified insect to wipe out the threat — a triumph of science that comes with an unforeseen cost. Years later, something massive and deeply wrong is lurking beneath the city's streets, and Tyler may be the only one who understands what it is. Guillermo del Toro brings his creature-feature sensibilities to the grimy tunnels and subway systems of New York, crafting a monster that feels both scientifically plausible and utterly nightmarish. Fans of old-school creature horror will find plenty to squirm about in the damp darkness below.
