The premise
Between 1978 and 1979, the inhabitants of the Oise are in fear of a maniac who kills several hitchhikers and escape the police. He was then dubbed "the killer of the Oise" is actually a shy young policeman who will investigate his own murder, only to lose control of the situation.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the muted landscape of late-1970s rural France, this chilling true-crime thriller follows the mounting terror gripping the Oise region as a series of hitchhikers fall victim to a calculated predator. What makes the film deeply unsettling is the intimate lens through which the killer is portrayed — a quiet, unremarkable man whose ordinary façade conceals something deeply fractured. Guillaume Canet delivers a controlled and haunting performance that keeps the audience perpetually off-balance. Director Franck Mancuso crafts a portrait of evil that is less about shock and more about the creeping horror of normalcy.
