The premise
Michael is a young boy living in a typical 1950s suburbanite home... except for his bizarre and horrific nightmares, and continued unease around his parents. Young Michael begins to suspect his parents are cooking more than just hamburgers on the grill outside, but has trouble explaining his fears to his new-found friend Sheila, or the school's social worker.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the gleaming, pastel-perfect backdrop of 1950s American suburbia, Parents follows young Michael — a quiet, anxious boy whose nightmares blur increasingly with waking life. Something about his cheerful, meat-obsessed parents fills him with a creeping dread he can barely put into words, let alone prove to the adults around him. Director Bob Balaban wraps a deeply disturbing premise in the aesthetic language of a wholesome family sitcom, weaponizing Americana's sunny surface against itself. The result is a slow-burn chiller that gets under the skin precisely because it keeps its horrors tantalizingly just out of reach.
