The premise

A man wanders into a seemingly deserted town with his young son in search of work. But after a bit of bad luck, he joins the town's population of lost souls.

Horror Vault's take

In the desolate landscape of a Japanese mining town, a desperate father and son arrive searching for work, only to find themselves entangled in something far stranger than poverty or hardship. Director Hiroshi Teshigahara-adjacent in spirit, this Japanese New Wave gem blurs the boundary between the living world and whatever lies beyond it. What begins as a grim social realist portrait gradually dissolves into unsettling, ghostly allegory. The film uses its crumbling ghost-town setting to haunting effect, forcing viewers to question what — and who — they are really watching.
