The premise

In the immense city of Tokyo, the darkness of the afterlife lures some of its inhabitants desperately trying to escape the sadness and isolation of the modern world.

Horror Vault's take

In the sprawling anonymity of Tokyo, something deeply wrong begins spreading through the internet — and the people who encounter it start to vanish in disturbing ways. Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa transforms the early-2000s anxiety around digital connectivity into a genuinely haunting meditation on loneliness and what lies beyond death. Two separate groups of young people find their lives converging around a creeping, inexplicable phenomenon that feels less like a ghost story and more like a slow collapse of the boundary between worlds. Bleak, patient, and visually oppressive, this is J-horror at its most philosophically ambitious.
