The premise

After arriving at his new, remote Army outpost, Capt. John Boyd and his regiment aid a wounded frontiersman who recounts a horrifying tale of a wagon train murdered by its supposed guide – a vicious U.S. Army colonel gone rogue. Fearing the worst, the regiment heads out into the wilderness to verify the gruesome claims.

Horror Vault's take

Set against the brutal winters of the 1840s Sierra Nevada, a disgraced Army captain finds himself stationed at a desolate frontier outpost when a bloodied stranger arrives with a chilling story that demands investigation. What begins as a rescue mission into the wilderness quickly spirals into something far more savage and philosophically disturbing. Blending pitch-black humor with genuine menace, Ravenous uses the mythology of the wendigo to skewer American expansionism with a sharp, blood-soaked wit. It is a singular film that defies easy categorization and rewards patient, adventurous viewers.
