The premise

In a sleek, self-contained luxury apartment complex, something has gone catastrophically wrong — a rogue biological experiment has been unleashed among the residents, and the contagion spreads fast. David Cronenberg's debut feature traps ordinary people in a sealed environment as their bodies and impulses are hijacked by something deeply, physically wrong. Equal parts science-fiction nightmare and visceral horror, it transforms the sterile comforts of modern living into a breeding ground for primal chaos. Few films of its era push the boundaries of flesh and desire quite this far.
