The premise

In this Chinese version of The Phantom of the Opera, the mysterious Song Danping terrorizes the newly rebuilt opera house and its young star.

Horror Vault's take

China's pioneering answer to the Phantom of the Opera legend, this 1937 classic weaves together operatic passion and shadowy menace within the ornate corridors of a newly restored opera house. A mysterious and tortured figure haunts the venue, his presence casting a dark spell over a promising young performer. Blending romance, tragedy, and horror, the film carries a distinctly Chinese dramatic sensibility that sets it apart from its Western counterparts. It remains a landmark of early Asian horror cinema.
