The premise

George Lutz, his wife Kathy, and their three children have just moved into a beautiful, and improbably cheap, Victorian mansion nestled in the sleepy coastal town of Amityville, Long Island. However, their dream home is concealing a horrific past and soon each member of the Lutz family is plagued with increasingly strange and violent visions and impulses.

Horror Vault's take

When the Lutz family snaps up a sprawling Victorian home on Long Island at a suspiciously low price, they quickly discover that a bargain can come with a devastating cost. Strange smells, sinister visions, and creeping behavioral changes begin tearing at the fabric of the household almost from the moment they move in. Based on the controversial true-story claims of the real Lutz family, the film grounds its scares in the everyday terror of a home that simply does not want its new occupants to stay. Rod Steiger turns in a memorable supporting performance as a priest whose own encounter with the house hints at a darkness far older than the family's nightmare.
