The Beyond1981
“Beyond death...Beyond Evil...Beyond the dreaded gates of hell.”
Directed by Lucio Fulci
The premise
New Yorker Liza Merril inherits an old hotel in Louisiana and invests her savings to reopen the place, unaware that the hotel houses the body of a dead painter murdered decades earlier, and that the location is about to become a gateway to Hell.
Horror Vault's take
A woman inherits a crumbling Louisiana hotel with a dark history she could never have anticipated, pouring everything she has into restoring it — only to find that something ancient and malevolent has been sealed within its walls. Director Lucio Fulci crafts a descent into waking nightmare where the boundary between the living world and something far worse begins to dissolve. Dream logic and relentless dread replace conventional storytelling, building an experience that feels less like a plot and more like a curse unfolding in real time. Few Italian horror films have matched its bleak, uncompromising vision of Hell as a place you can stumble into by accident.
