The Devil and Father Amorth2018
“In 1973, he brought us the film classic. 45 years later, director William Friedkin brings us the real thing.”
Directed by William Friedkin
The premise
William Friedkin attends an exorcism with Father Gabriele Amorth, as he treats an Italian woman named Cristina for the ninth time. Prior to filming, Cristina had purportedly been experiencing behavioural changes and “fits” that could not be explained by psychiatry, and which became worse during Christian holidays.
Horror Vault's take
Decades after directing one of cinema's most iconic exorcism films, William Friedkin turns his lens on the real thing — accompanying legendary Vatican exorcist Father Gabriele Amorth as he performs a live exorcism on a deeply troubled Italian woman. What Friedkin captures on camera forces both filmmaker and viewer to wrestle with questions that medicine and psychiatry alone struggle to answer. The documentary probes the blurry boundary between psychological illness and something the Church insists is far darker, leaving the ultimate interpretation squarely in the audience's hands.
