The premise

Strange things begin to occur as a tiny California coastal town prepares to commemorate its centenary. Inanimate objects spring eerily to life; Rev. Malone stumbles upon a dark secret about the town's founding; radio announcer Stevie witnesses a mystical fire; and hitchhiker Elizabeth discovers the mutilated corpse of a fisherman. Then a mysterious iridescent fog descends upon the village, and more people start to die.

Horror Vault's take

As the coastal village of Antonio Bay prepares to celebrate its hundredth anniversary, unsettling omens ripple through the community — objects move on their own, a local priest uncovers a damning secret buried in the town's founding, and a glowing, unnatural fog rolls in off the water. John Carpenter crafts a ghost story steeped in maritime dread, where the sins of the past have a way of finding the living. With a standout radio-DJ performance from Adrienne Barbeau broadcasting from an isolated lighthouse, the film builds tension through atmosphere rather than spectacle. What lurks inside the fog is patient, purposeful, and deeply vengeful.
