The premise
In 1920s England, former clergyman Dr Lawrence keeps his cannibal son locked in the attic after the young man is exposed to savage practices in India. When an auto race is held at the estate, Lawrence worries that his son may escape and terrorise the youth.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the fog-laden English countryside of the 1920s, this Hammer-flavoured Gothic horror follows a tormented ex-clergyman harbouring a terrible secret deep within his grand estate. When a group of young motorists stumbles onto the property during a road rally, the carefully maintained isolation of the household is threatened in ways that cannot end well. Peter Cushing leads a distinguished cast through a slow-burn tale of inherited sin and hidden horror. The film draws on period anxieties around empire and the dangers of foreign influence to give its monster a distinctly unsettling cultural weight.
