Set against the grimy, neon-lit underbelly of 1970s Hamburg, The Golden Glove plunges viewers into the hunting ground of a real-life serial killer who preyed upon the most overlooked members of society. Based on a true-crime novel, the film immerses itself unflinchingly in the squalor of the red-light district and the desperate lives caught within it. Director Fatih Akin's portrait is less a conventional thriller than a punishing, visceral excavation of evil — not designed to entertain so much as to confront.
