The premise

Dr. John Markway recruits three strangers for a sleep-disorder study at the eerie and isolated Hill House. It soon becomes clear his real interest lies in the mansion itself and its sinister history, as they are forced to confront the nature of its horror…

Horror Vault's take

A parapsychologist assembles a small group of strangers at the notoriously forbidding Hill House under the guise of scientific inquiry — but the house has its own agenda. Director Robert Wise crafts terror almost entirely without showing a single monster, letting the architecture, shadows, and a fragile protagonist's unraveling mind do the work. Adapted from Shirley Jackson's landmark novel, this black-and-white classic remains a masterclass in suggestion and dread. Whether the evil is real or imagined may be the most frightening question of all.
