The premise

On the eve of her 17th birthday, Mari and friend Phyllis set off from her family home to attend a rock concert in the city. Attempting to score some drugs on the way, the pair run afoul of a group of vicious crooks, headed up by the sadistic Krug.

Horror Vault's take

Two teenage girls heading to a city concert make a fateful detour that puts them in the hands of a merciless criminal gang led by the notorious Krug. What follows is an unflinching descent into cruelty that earned this low-budget shocker its reputation as one of the most controversial films of its era. When the horror finds its way back to a quiet family home, the film pivots into raw, visceral territory that blurs the line between victim and perpetrator. Wes Craven's debut remains a punishing, deliberately rough-edged experience that still provokes debate decades on.
