Set against the rain-soaked industrial gloom of 1990s China, The Looming Storm follows a factory security guard whose inflated self-image as an amateur sleuth draws him dangerously deep into a local murder investigation. His fixation on the case warps his judgment and begins to unravel his personal life. This is a slow-burn character study wrapped in the skin of a crime thriller, where the real menace may be closer to the protagonist than he cares to admit.
