The premise
Tom Ripley is a calculating young man who believes it's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody. Opportunity knocks in the form of a wealthy U.S. shipbuilder who hires Tom to travel to Italy to bring back his playboy son, Dickie. Ripley worms his way into the idyllic lives of Dickie and his girlfriend, plunging into a daring scheme of duplicity, lies and murder.
Horror Vault's take
Tom Ripley is a man of modest means and limitless ambition, dispatched to sun-drenched Italy with a simple errand that quickly curdles into something far more dangerous. Insinuating himself into the glamorous world of a privileged expatriate and his circle, Tom discovers that the life he craves may only be within reach if he's willing to become someone else entirely. Anthony Minghella's lush adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel is a masterclass in creeping dread, its gorgeous Mediterranean backdrop hiding a portrait of a mind unraveling under the weight of its own lies.
