Rooted in Orthodox Jewish tradition, The Vigil follows a man reluctantly tasked with performing shmirah — an overnight watch over the dead — in a cramped Brooklyn apartment. What begins as a simple act of community duty quickly curdles into a harrowing night as something ancient and predatory makes its presence felt. Drawing on the lore of the mazzik, the film carves out genuinely fresh horror territory far removed from the usual demonic playbook. It is a slow-burn chamber piece that earns its scares through atmosphere and emotional weight rather than cheap shocks.
