Jerry is a cheerful factory worker whose grip on reality is far shakier than his coworkers realize — a fact made vivid by the spirited debates between his talking cat and his talking dog, each pulling him in very different moral directions. Marsha Figgis directs this pitch-black comedy that uses bright pastel aesthetics and dark humor to explore the inner world of a deeply troubled man. Ryan Reynolds delivers a disarming performance that keeps Jerry oddly sympathetic even as his choices grow increasingly alarming. Equal parts whimsical and deeply unsettling, the film dares to ask what it looks like inside a mind that has lost its footing on the real world.
