The premise

A lawyer travels to a small seaside town to settle the estate of a recently deceased woman, but soon becomes ensnared in something much more sinister.

Horror Vault's take

A young solicitor ventures to a remote coastal village on routine legal business, only to find that the locals harbour a collective dread they refuse to name. As he works through the affairs of a dead recluse, a pale figure begins to haunt the edges of his vision — and the surrounding marshes hold secrets far darker than any legal document. This 1989 television adaptation of Susan Hill's celebrated novel is a masterclass in restrained, atmospheric terror, prioritising creeping dread over cheap shocks. Few ghost stories committed to British TV have left such a lasting chill.
