The premise

A social misfit, Willard is made fun of by his co-workers, and squeezed out of the company started by his deceased father by his boss. His only friends are a couple of rats he raised at home, Ben and Socrates. However, when one of them is killed at work, he goes on a rampage using his rats to attack those who have been tormenting him.

Horror Vault's take

Willard is a lonely, downtrodden young man crushed beneath the weight of an overbearing mother, a predatory boss, and a workplace full of tormentors — his only solace found in the rats he carefully raises at home. What begins as an unlikely bond between a misfit and his rodent companions gradually curdles into something far darker, as Willard discovers he can bend his animals to his will. The film is a slow-burn portrait of a man pushed to his breaking point, using the stuff of everyday phobia to explore how the powerless can suddenly become terrifying. Elsa Lanchester and Ernest Borgnine round out a memorable cast in this unsettling cult classic.
