The premise
During the Civil War in 17th-Century England, a small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by an alchemist, who forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the chaos of the English Civil War, a ragged band of deserters stumbles into something far more dangerous than the battlefield they left behind — a remote field presided over by a sinister alchemist with an obsessive hunger for buried secrets. Forced to dig and endure, the men consume wild mushrooms that blur the line between vision and reality, dragging them into a spiral of paranoia and dread. Director Ben Wheatley shoots in stark black and white, delivering an experience that feels less like a conventional horror film and more like a waking nightmare conjured from the English soil itself. What the field ultimately contains may defy every expectation you bring to it.
