The premise
A family moves into a large old mansion in the countryside which seems to have a mysterious and sinister power over its new residents.
Horror Vault's take
When a family rents a sprawling Victorian estate for the summer, what begins as an idyllic retreat slowly curdles into something far more disturbing. The grand old house seems to exert a strange, creeping pull on its inhabitants — shifting moods, eroding relationships, and awakening impulses that can't easily be explained. Director Dan Curtis layers tension through atmosphere and dread rather than cheap shocks, letting the building itself become the film's most menacing presence. With a cast headlined by Karen Black, Oliver Reed, and Bette Davis, this adaptation of Robert Marasco's novel is a masterclass in Gothic unease.
