The premise
A young girl witnesses her mother having sex with the family dog. When her father finds out, he burns the dog alive. She is so traumatized by these incidents that she later turns into a nymphomaniac. She moves to an island and lives there with her own dog, having sex with various guests who visit her.
Horror Vault's take
A deeply unsettling Italian exploitation drama-horror hybrid, Dog Lay Afternoon charts the psychological unraveling of a woman whose scarred childhood casts a long, dark shadow over her adult life. Retreating to a remote island, she constructs a world entirely on her own terms — one that blurs the line between liberation and compulsion. The film revels in its transgressive premise, trading conventional horror set-pieces for a slow, creeping dread rooted in human psychology. Fans of European cult cinema will recognize the bleak, boundary-pushing spirit that defined the era's most controversial output.
