The premise
First-time father Henry Spencer tries to survive his industrial environment, his angry girlfriend, and the unbearable screams of his newly born mutant child.

David Lynch's debut feature plunges viewers into a monochrome industrial wasteland where a meek, bewildered man finds himself tethered to a relationship and a newborn that defy the boundaries of the natural world. The film operates less like conventional narrative and more like a sustained fever dream, building an atmosphere of suffocating unease through sound design and stark imagery that buries itself in the subconscious. Equal parts surrealist art piece and visceral horror, it remains one of cinema's most singular and haunting visions of anxiety made flesh.
