The premise

Disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist investigates the disappearance of a weary patriarch's niece from 40 years ago. He is aided by the pierced, tattooed, punk computer hacker named Lisbeth Salander. As they work together in the investigation, Blomkvist and Salander uncover immense corruption beyond anything they have ever imagined.

Horror Vault's take

Deep in the frozen Swedish countryside, a disgraced journalist and an unconventional hacker form an unlikely alliance to crack a decades-old disappearance that a powerful family would prefer stay buried. Director David Fincher wraps a labyrinthine cold-case mystery in an atmosphere of creeping dread, where every answer seems to reveal something darker underneath. Rooney Mara's portrayal of Lisbeth Salander — brilliant, damaged, and fiercely self-reliant — is the beating, bruised heart of the film. This is methodical, punishing thriller-making that does not flinch from the ugliness it uncovers.
