The premise

A chess grandmaster is in a big tournament, and when his lover is found painted up and the blood drained out of her body he becomes a chief suspect. After he gets a call from the killer urging him to try and figure out the game, he cooperates with police and a psychologist to try and catch the killer, but doubts linger about the grandmaster's innocence as the string of grisly murders continues.

Horror Vault's take

When a chess grandmaster's lover turns up dead in a shocking and ritualistic manner, suspicion falls on the one person closest to her. Drawn into a deadly cat-and-mouse correspondence with the real killer, he must outmaneuver a mind as calculating as his own. Working alongside detectives and a police psychologist, he races to prove his innocence before the body count climbs — but the line between suspect and sleuth grows dangerously blurred. Think chess, but every piece on the board is a human life.
