The premise
A young sailor finds himself trapped in the labyrinthine mansion of his occultist uncle, along with a number of eccentric and mysterious relatives who all seem to be harboring a dark secret.

A young sailor stumbles into the decaying domain of his powerful, enigmatic uncle — a vast and disorienting mansion called Malpertuis — and finds himself unable to leave. The eccentric inhabitants who share the house conceal dark truths beneath their uncanny facades, drawing the sailor deeper into a waking nightmare rooted in ancient myth. Directed with baroque, surrealist flair and anchored by a commanding performance from Orson Welles, this Belgian-French co-production is one of European horror's most singular and underappreciated oddities.
