Horror Vault's take

After two young sisters vanish into the wilderness following a devastating family tragedy, they are eventually discovered in a feral state — and brought into the care of their uncle and his reluctant girlfriend. As the girls slowly readjust to civilized life, it becomes disturbingly clear that whatever watched over them in the woods has followed them home. Guillermo del Toro's producing touch lends this ghost story an emotionally complex undercurrent, weaving genuine dread with a surprisingly affecting meditation on what it means to be a mother. Director Andrés Muschietti crafts an atmosphere where childhood innocence and something deeply wrong occupy the same unsettling space.
