The premise

London, 1888: on the night of the third Jack the Ripper killing, soft-spoken Mr. Slade, a research pathologist, takes lodgings with the Harleys, including a gloomy attic room for "experiments." Mrs. Harley finds Slade odd and increasingly suspects the worst; her niece Lily (star of a decidedly Parisian stage revue) finds him interesting and increasingly attractive. Is Lily in danger, or are her mother's suspicions merely a red herring?

Horror Vault's take

In fog-drenched 1888 London, a quietly unsettling pathologist named Slade takes rooms in a respectable household — locking himself away in the attic under the pretense of private experiments — just as the Ripper's body count rises in the streets below. Jack Palance brings an magnetic, disquieting menace to the role, keeping audiences guessing whether Slade is monster, misunderstood eccentric, or something altogether more complicated. The landlady's mounting dread clashes with her niece's dangerous fascination, turning the domestic home itself into a pressure cooker of suspicion. This lean, stylish noir-tinged thriller wrings real unease from the oldest of horror questions: what lurks behind a polite, closed door?
