The premise
The Spanish Deep South, 1980. A series of brutal murders of adolescent girls in a remote and forgotten town bring together two disparate characters – both detectives in the homicide division – to investigate the cases.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the oppressive heat and sprawling wetlands of Spain's deep south in the early 1980s, Marshland follows two mismatched homicide detectives sent to a remote, forgotten town to investigate the disappearances and murders of young girls. The case forces the pair — each carrying the weight of Spain's turbulent recent past — into an uneasy alliance as they navigate a community that would rather keep its secrets buried. Director Alberto Rodríguez crafts a slow-burn procedural drenched in atmosphere, where the landscape itself feels like a co-conspirator. What begins as a hunt for a killer gradually becomes a deeper reckoning with guilt, complicity, and survival.
