The premise

In 1989, Lara Hill, accompanies her art historian father to an abandoned castle across the Iron Curtain. From a car crash outside of the castle, emerges the beautiful and mysterious Carmilla. Lara secrets Carmilla into the castle and the two are drawn into an intoxicating relationship. But when Carmilla mysteriously disappears, and women of the town begin committing suicide, Lara’s psychic wounds erupt into a living nightmare that consumes the entire town of Styria.

Horror Vault's take

Set against the crumbling grandeur of a Cold War–era Eastern European castle, The Curse of Styria transplants the classic Carmilla vampire legend into 1989, just as the Iron Curtain begins to fall. A lonely young woman named Lara finds herself irresistibly drawn to a mysterious stranger who emerges from a roadside accident — beautiful, otherworldly, and impossible to resist. What begins as an intoxicating companionship slowly curdles into something far darker as unexplained deaths ripple through the surrounding town. This is gothic horror filtered through obsession and psychological unease rather than outright terror.
