The premise

Amy, the young, friendless daughter of Oliver and Alice Reed, befriends her father's late first wife and an aging, reclusive actress.

Horror Vault's take

A lonely little girl with a rich inner life finds unlikely companionship in figures her parents cannot understand or accept — one a reclusive old woman, the other a presence that may exist only in the child's imagination. Rooted more in mood and melancholy than monster-movie thrills, this 1944 follow-up to Cat People is a quiet, dreamlike meditation on the ache of childhood isolation. Director Robert Wise conjures a wintry, shadow-drenched world where the line between the real and the supernatural is left deliberately — and beautifully — blurred. It is tender and unsettling in equal measure.
