The premise
They Returned is a beautifully touching and unnerving story about the unexplained disappearance of three children, two boys and one girl, and their reappearance three days later in a semi-autistic state. Not even the children themselves are able to help anyone understand what happened.
Horror Vault's take
When three children vanish without explanation and reappear three days later in a withdrawn, near-unreachable state, the community around them is left desperately searching for answers that may never come. Set against a backdrop of Argentine history shadowed by political corruption and a Nazi legacy, the film weaves the personal with the deeply unsettling. Neither the investigators, the families, nor the children themselves can shed light on what happened — and that silence is perhaps the most frightening thing of all. This Argentine horror-drama trades cheap scares for a creeping, cerebral dread that lingers long after the credits roll.
