The premise
England, 1645. The cruel civil war between Royalists and Parliamentarians that is ravaging the country causes an era of chaos and legal arbitrariness that allows unscrupulous men to profit by exploiting the absurd superstitions of the peasants; like Matthew Hopkins, a monster disguised as a man who wanders from town to town offering his services as a witch hunter.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the lawless backdrop of the English Civil War, Witchfinder General follows the real-life figure of Matthew Hopkins — a self-appointed purger of witches who exploits superstition and societal collapse to terrorize rural communities with impunity. Vincent Price delivers one of his most chilling and restrained performances as Hopkins, a man whose evil is rooted entirely in human ambition rather than the supernatural. As Hopkins cuts a brutal path across the Suffolk countryside, a young soldier finds himself on a deeply personal collision course with the witchfinder. Directed by Michael Reeves, the film is a landmark of British horror — angry, unsparing, and disturbingly grounded in history.
